BEIJING, Dec. 30, 2024 —  The 19th China-Ethiopia Friendship Relay Race, organized by China First Highway Engineering Co., Ltd. (CFHEC), concluded successfully on December 15th in Addis Ababa. This year’s race celebrated its 20th anniversary, highlighting two decades of Sino-Ethiopian friendship and collaboration. Held under the theme “Running to Build Dreams, Demonstrating Corporate Responsibilities,” the event drew over 2,000 participants, encompassing representatives from Addis Ababa City Administration, embassies, businesses, social media, and Chinese firms. Notable attendees included Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai, Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Bareo Hassen Bareo, and CFHEC executives, who presented awards to winning teams.

Established in 2004 by CFHEC to promote road safety, the race has become a significant public welfare initiative and a cherished local tradition. It serves not only as a major sporting event but also as a platform showcasing Ethiopians’ aspirations. The relay race symbolizes the strong partnership between CFHEC and the Addis Ababa City Administration.

On December 14th, CFHEC marked the relay race’s 20th anniversary with a special event and a press conference announcing its 2023-2024 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. The event showcased CFHEC’s Ethiopian operations and contributions to sustainable development and social responsibility. Around 200 representatives from local government and 28 media outlets were present. Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie and world long-distance running champion Yalemzerf Yehualaw shared their experiences. Ethiopian officials expressed gratitude for CFHEC’s long-term commitment and their hope for continued strengthening of China-Ethiopia relations.

The successful relay race underlines the strong ties between China and Ethiopia and reflects CFHEC’s dedication to social responsibility. CFHEC remains committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities and contributing to the development of China-Ethiopia relations.
