The 6th China-France Cultural Forum, held in Deauville, France from November 12th to 14th, highlighted the importance of mutual curiosity and respect between these two ancient civilizations, according to Jean-Pierre Raffarin, former French Prime Minister and President of the Foundation Prospective and Innovation (FPI). He stressed that while cultural differences exist, the forum serves as a platform to foster understanding between the Chinese and French people.

This year marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between China and France, two nations representing Eastern and Western civilizations with a history of mutual appreciation. In a time of unprecedented global change, increased interaction and communication between China and France exemplify successful inter-civilizational dialogue.

Bridging Cultures Through Shared Understanding and Respect  

Successful cross-cultural exchange necessitates open-mindedness, finding common ground while acknowledging differences. Christine Cayol, founder of Yishu 8, shared insights into the forum’s inception, highlighting the collaborative efforts of artists from both countries in promoting cultural exchange and learning.

The forum has become a leading platform for Sino-French cultural exchange, integrated into the high-level people-to-people exchange mechanism between the two nations. Founded in 2009, Yishu 8, with bases in Beijing and Paris, facilitates artistic collaboration between France and China.

Philippe Augier, Mayor of Deauville, noted that cultural openness cultivates understanding and dialogue promotes people-to-people connections. Deauville’s history of hosting Chinese art exhibitions reflects its commitment to fostering cultural understanding. Lu Shaye, China’s ambassador to France, highlighted the strong relationship between Deauville and China as a microcosm of broader Sino-French cultural exchanges.

A Legacy of Innovation

The forum’s theme, “Inheritance and Innovation of Civilizations: 60-year Cooperation and Development Between China and France,” emphasized artistic innovation and people-to-people exchanges. Ding Zhongli, president of the Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA) and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the valuable Sino-French friendship.

Mao Weitao, vice chairman of the China Theatre Association and chairman of Dramatist Association of Zhejiang Province, discussed the challenges facing traditional performing arts in the digital age, while also noting the resurgence of traditional forms through innovative approaches by young artists.

Yannick Bolloré, chairman of the supervisory board of Vivendi, emphasized the role of culture as a bridge for mutual understanding, with both ancient texts and modern technology providing avenues for cross-cultural appreciation. He concluded by highlighting the enduring vitality of Chinese and French civilizations and the ongoing importance of cultural exchange.
