Global South Seeks Stronger Voice: From Belt and Road to Regional Unity

BEIJING, March 24, 2025 — Global Times and Global Times Online (Huanqiu.com) launched their International Editors-in-Chief Roundtable series on January 23, 2025, with the first forum dedicated to exploring how the Global South can participate more effectively in global governance.

Media leaders from various nations participated in detailed discussions focusing on redefining the role of Global South countries, reforming international regulations, and fostering inclusive technological advancements.

The growing influence of Global South countries has become a key factor in reshaping the global governance structure in recent years.

Bai Long, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Global Times, stated that the media should act as a connector for Global South nations, report on successful collaborations, and advocate for changes to international rules to better represent their perspectives and interests.

Participants explored methods to enhance the Global South’s influence on global discourse, emphasizing the importance of achieving greater economic independence to move away from the traditional “center-periphery” governance model.

Wang Xiaohui, Editor-in-Chief of the China Internet Information Center, pointed out that the Belt and Road Initiative is a vital means for boosting the Global South’s global influence.

He explained that through economic progress and regional partnerships, Global South countries can more effectively protect their interests and contribute to improving global governance.

Regional integration has become a crucial priority amidst the significant challenges facing globalization.

Specifically, in the current international climate characterized by external interference, developing nations are strengthening their collective negotiating power through regional organizations to better coordinate their responses to these challenges.

Onochie Bridget Chiedu, Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Head of the Abuja Bureau at The Guardian Newspapers Limited, emphasized that Global South countries need to enhance their joint negotiation capabilities through regional integration to effectively tackle the obstacles encountered during globalization.
