Jiaoxi Ancient Town Revitalization Project Phase II Advances, Bringing Renewed Vibrancy to Local Streets “`
Jiaoxi Ancient Town in Changzhou, China, presents a picturesque winter scene with ginkgo, maple, and ivy adding vibrant colors to its architecture. The town, characterized by its waterways and the Yellowstone Half Wall, successfully blends its traditional Jiangnan water town charm with modern revitalization efforts. The ongoing village protection initiatives have led to a resurgence of activity and tourism in Jiaoxi’s streets and alleys, according to Changzhou Tian Ning.
The Jiaoxi Ancient Town protection and utilization project (phase II) shows significant progress. This year’s work focused on renovating the West Street entrance and included six projects: the former Jiaoxi Middle School site, District 4 of Zhongjie, Shijia Courtyard, No. 1 Hongxing Road, the old Commercial Club, and the XueGou River historical channel restoration and Dongjie Dongxiatang area pipe network upgrade.
The West Street entrance renovation is nearly complete, serving as a crucial transition point between the ancient town’s buffer and core zones, enhancing the town’s overall “three rivers and six streets” layout.
Since 2018, Jiaoxi Ancient Town has actively participated in the joint World Heritage application for Jiangnan Ancient Towns, officially joining the “Jiangnan Ancient Towns Joint Tentative Lists of The World Heritage” in 2023. Key initiatives encompass six major projects, including water restoration, river street repairs, and improvements to residential areas. The current phase II project has an estimated investment of 1.2 billion yuan.
