Pony.ai Introduces 7th-Gen Robotaxis, Eyes Mass Production by Mid-2025
SHANGHAI, China, April 23, 2025 — Pony AI Inc. (Nasdaq: PONY), a leading company in the commercialization of autonomous driving, presented its seventh-generation autonomous driving system and showcased its Robotaxi lineup with Toyota, BAIC, and GAC at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Shanghai Auto Show).
The new autonomous driving system utilizes a 100% automotive-grade autonomous driving kit (ADK) designed for a long product lifecycle, ensuring greater stability and safety. Design improvements have led to a 70% reduction in bill-of-materials (BOM) costs, including an 80% decrease in autonomous driving computation (ADC) costs and a 68% reduction in solid-state LiDAR costs, compared to the previous generation. Its modular platform allows easy adaptation to different vehicle types, from the Robotaxi models to future Robotruck services.
Dr. James Peng, Co-founder and CEO of Pony.ai, stated that 2025 marks the beginning of Pony.ai’s mass-produced Robotaxis. He emphasized that successful large-scale production depends on technological readiness, product integration, and refined operational capabilities, which form the core of Pony.ai’s strategy. He noted that the company’s progress in these areas positions it to deploy Robotaxis safely and reliably.
Dr. Tiancheng Lou, CTO of Pony.ai, explained that the safety standards for L4 systems exceed those of human drivers, a level they believe cannot be achieved by simply mimicking human behavior. Their PonyWorld system generates realistic scenarios, conducts detailed simulations, and establishes benchmarks for behavior evaluation to enable autonomous decision-making that surpasses human capabilities. He added that this advanced technology makes L4 autonomous driving feasible and ensures scalability at a reasonable cost.
Three seventh-generation Robotaxi models, developed in partnership with Toyota, BAIC, and GAC, were revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show. The collaboration with Toyota has been strengthened with the launch of the Toyota bZ4X Robotaxi, the first production model featuring Pony.ai’s latest system. New BAIC and GAC Robotaxi models, the ARCFOX Alpha T5 and second-generation Aion V, were also launched, completing the company’s next-generation Robotaxi lineup.
