Tongliang, China’s ‘Dragon City,’ Promotes Cultural Heritage and Tourism
CHONGQING, China, Sept. 13, 2024 — Tongliang District in Chongqing saw a significant boost in tourism revenue in the first half of 2024, with a 14.1 percent year-on-year increase reaching 7.46 billion yuan, as announced at a press conference held on September 13 by the Chongqing Municipal Government Information Office and Tongliang District.
Tongliang has been actively promoting its image as a vibrant and welcoming “Dragon City” by enhancing its iconic immersive cultural heritage performance “Chasing Dreams: Tongliang Dragon” and organizing regular events such as the Chinese dragon and lion dance competition, the dragon lantern festival, and the dragon boat race during the Dragon Boat Festival.
Moreover, Tongliang has established a dragon-themed cultural district and a dragon lantern production base, preserving and showcasing its thousand-year-old cultural heritage from diverse perspectives. Each visit to Tongliang holds the promise of new and exciting discoveries related to dragons.
The Tongliang dragon dance has gained international recognition since the 1980s, winning accolades in major international and domestic events. It has been featured in the National Day celebrations in Beijing four times and has participated in cultural exchanges in over 30 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. With its growing network of dragon arts enthusiasts, the Tongliang dragon dance has become a prominent symbol of Chinese dragon culture.
The ancient city of Anju in Tongliang, with a history spanning 1,500 years, is known as a living historical site. It showcases a stunning architectural complex of nine palaces and eighteen temples, as well as a spectacular water cloud dragon performance. The water cloud dragon appears amidst a misty atmosphere, creating an ethereal ambiance as water droplets splash around it.
Tongliang offers picturesque scenery throughout the year, inviting visitors to explore the ancient city, witness mesmerizing dragon dances, and admire magnificent dragon lanterns.
