Situated in Eastern Europe, bordering the Black and Azov Seas, Ukraine (capital: Kyiv) shares borders with Belarus, Russia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova. This resource-rich nation spans 603,700 square kilometers, making it Europe’s second-largest country by land area. It’s administratively divided into 24 oblasts, one autonomous republic (Crimea), and two cities with special status (Kyiv and Sevastopol).

As of September 2022, Ukraine’s population totaled 41.13 million (excluding Crimea). Classified as a developing country, it boasts a highly advanced agricultural sector, although its industrial development, particularly manufacturing, lags. A global leader in IT services, Ukraine is the largest market for software development and outsourcing in Central and Eastern Europe. Its 2021 GDP was approximately $200 billion.

The National Academy of Engineering of Ukraine (Академія Інженерних Наук України) is a leading Ukrainian academic institution, evolving from the Ukrainian Republic Branch of the Soviet Union Academy of Engineering. Since 1998, it’s been a member of CAETS (Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences), a global alliance of engineering academies from 27 countries, including the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In December 2023, the Academy comprised over 160 academicians, more than 130 corresponding members, and over 50 foreign academicians. Its current president, Petro Mihailovich Talanchuk, has served as Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, President of the National Technical University of Ukraine, a 1994 presidential candidate, and currently advises the Ukrainian President.

Professor Xiang, elected on July 22, 2024, is also a recipient of the British King’s Medal and the European Outstanding Achievement Award.
