SHANGHAI, Dec. 20, 2024 — UnionPay International announced a new partnership with Weixin Pay on December 17, enabling users of eight international UnionPay-powered digital wallets to use Weixin Pay QR codes in mainland China. These wallets include BoC Pay (Bank of China, Hong Kong), Octopus, PayMe (HSBC), and Tap & Go (Hong Kong SAR); Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking and K PLUS (KASIKORNBANK, Thailand); Naver Pay (South Korea); and ICBC Mobile Banking (ICBC Pay, Malaysia). This expands mobile payment options for international visitors to mainland China.

Through this collaboration, users link their physical or digital UnionPay cards within the participating wallets to pay via Weixin Pay QR codes. Their home currency is automatically converted to RMB. Future expansion will include more UnionPay-powered wallets from Macao SAR, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, and other regions.

Since launching Project Excellence 2024 in March, UnionPay has actively collaborated with industry partners to simplify payments for inbound tourists. UnionPay App users could already scan Weixin Pay codes starting in June. This latest development with international wallets represents a significant milestone in enhanced payment interoperability between UnionPay and Weixin Pay.

This partnership demonstrates UnionPay’s commitment to industry collaboration and sustainable business models. It offers more payment choices and a smoother experience for international visitors to mainland China, supporting China’s broader economic opening. In 2018, UnionPay partnered with Weixin Pay and WeChat Pay HK to provide a cross-border solution for Hong Kong residents, enabling transactions at millions of mainland China merchants.

UnionPay’s localized services are increasingly popular internationally. Over 250 million UnionPay cards have been issued in 83 countries and regions, and more than 200 UnionPay-powered wallets operate in 36 countries and regions, all accessible via UnionPay’s global network.
