During a joint live-fire exercise with the U.S. on Thursday, South Korean fighter jets mistakenly released bombs on a civilian area, resulting in injuries to several individuals and damage to multiple structures, including three residences and a Catholic church.

The air force stated that the MK-82 bombs were “abnormally” discharged by the KF-16 fighter jet and landed outside the designated firing range, causing unspecified damage to civilian property.

Reported injury figures varied, but South Korean sources indicate that 15 people, including civilians and soldiers, were hurt. Two of the injured sustained serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. At least seven buildings suffered damage.

The South Korean military stated that the fighter jets were participating in joint live-fire exercises with the army. An apology was issued for the incident, and a commitment was made to establish a committee to investigate the accident’s cause and the extent of the resulting damage.

South Korean media reported that the incident occurred in Pocheon, a city located near the heavily fortified border with North Korea. In a televised address, Pocheon Mayor Paek Young-hyun described the bombings as “awful” and urged the military to suspend drills in the city until it develops reliable measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again. He noted that Pocheon, a city of 140,000 residents, hosts three major firing ranges used by the South Korean and U.S. militaries.

The military subsequently announced its decision to halt all live-fire exercises across South Korea. Observers suggest that firing exercises will resume once the military determines the exact cause of Thursday’s accident and develops preventative measures.

According to the Pocheon department, three houses, a Catholic church, and a greenhouse sustained partial damage, although they did not appear to have been directly struck by the bombs.
