Russian media outlets reported the detention of an American citizen at a Moscow airport for allegedly possessing cannabis gummies.

The 28-year-old was apprehended at Vnukovo Airport on February 7th after a Russian Federal Customs Service canine unit detected contraband in his luggage, according to TASS.

He had arrived in Russia via Istanbul.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged the reports of a detained citizen but offered no further details.

TASS, citing the customs service, stated that a chemical analysis confirmed the presence of cannabinoids. The detained individual reportedly claimed the gummies were prescribed by a U.S. doctor.

He faces narcotics smuggling charges, with a potential prison sentence ranging from five to ten years, TASS reported.

This incident follows the recent release of Marc Fogel, a U.S. citizen imprisoned in Russia on drug charges for four years, in a prisoner exchange involving Russian national Alexander Vinnik.

Fogel returned to the U.S. on Tuesday.

Fogel, from Pennsylvania, had been serving a 14-year sentence after his 2021 arrest for possessing what his family claimed were medically prescribed marijuana.

In 2022, WNBA player Brittney Griner was released from Russian detention after eight months, having been detained at a Moscow airport for possessing cannabis oil vape cartridges.

She was detained upon her return to play in a Russian basketball league.
