Irish authorities have reported that a 60-year-old American man was found dead in his hotel room at Ballyfin Demesne, a luxurious five-star hotel in Ireland, on Tuesday. The man was discovered unconscious and later pronounced dead by police.
Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police and security service, has stated that a 30-year-old man has been arrested and detained in connection with the assault. According to The Irish Times, the suspect and the victim traveled together and the suspect is also an American.
A senior investigating officer has been assigned to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Portlaoise Garda Station. Police have also appointed a family liaison officer to provide support to the family of the deceased.
The Ballyfin Demesne is a renowned five-star hotel that has hosted notable figures such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who stayed there for their honeymoon in 2014.
Actor George Clooney and his wife, Amal, have also been guests at the hotel.
Local independent councilor James Kelly told RTE that nearby communities were “shocked” by the incident at the distinguished hotel.
“There would be a lot of staff from the area, and they’re totally shocked by what has happened here,” he said. “It’s something we didn’t think we’d be waking up to this morning.”
