Biden’s Seating at Pope’s Funeral Sparks Discussion: ‘No Longer Among World Leaders’
While present at Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican on Saturday, was situated among numerous global figures, his position as a former head of state impacting his placement.
Biden, accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden, was seated further back in the section for foreign dignitaries, unlike President and other current world leaders. This positioning reflected their status as former heads of state.
Online commentators on X noted Biden’s seating, with one account stating he was “no longer part of the cool kids club,” accompanied by a photo of Biden in the back.
Another X user commented, “LMAO! They put Biden in the way back at the funeral of Pope Francis.”
Another user added, “Look at how lost he looks.”
One X user wrote, “They put Biden in the back of the Pope’s funeral like a dog,”
Another post on X read, “Joe Biden was treated like a nursing home patient on the world stage President Trump is treated like a Rockstar on the world stage!” contrasting Biden’s location with that of Trump and other world leaders.
Biden was seen being guided to his seat by his wife and a priest, holding onto them for support.
Before the funeral, Biden was seen taking selfies with Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa.
Biden also took photos with other attendees at the funeral, appearing to smile in each.
Biden previously visited the Vatican in October 2021, meeting with Pope Francis to discuss climate change and poverty advocacy, according to a transcript.
Biden had met Pope Francis on multiple occasions, including during the Pope’s U.S. visit in 2015.
In June, Biden met with Pope Francis at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Apulia, Italy, discussing the Israel-Hamas war, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the Ukraine-Russia conflict, according to meeting reports.
Biden, who awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January, called him a “consequential” leader and a “Pope for everyone” on Monday.
“He was unlike any who came before him,” Biden posted on X Monday morning. “Pope Francis will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of our time and I am better for having known him. For decades, he served the most vulnerable across Argentina and his mission of serving the poor never ceased. As Pope, he was a loving pastor and challenging teacher who reached out to different faiths.”
Francis, who had been battling pneumonia before his death, had health issues for years, including the removal of half a lung when he was young.
Francis passed away Monday morning, the day after Easter, at the Vatican, at the age of 88.
According to Vatican officials, Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, head of the Vatican’s health department, stated the Pope’s death resulted from a cerebral stroke that led to heart failure, inducing a coma and irreversible heart failure.
He was elected as Pope on March 13, 2013, and was the first Jesuit to hold the position.
The Pope’s last public appearance was on Easter Sunday at St. Peter’s Square.
