Bolsonaro Indicted in Brazil for Attempted Coup
Brazil’s top prosecutor initiated legal proceedings on Tuesday against former President Jair Bolsonaro, accusing him of orchestrating a coup attempt to cling to power following his electoral loss in 2022.
Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet claims Bolsonaro and 33 others conspired to subvert the legitimate transfer of power after losing to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In November, a comprehensive 884-page Federal Police report, outlining a plan involving systematic erosion of public trust in the electoral process, the drafting of a decree to provide a facade of legality, pressure on high-ranking military officials, and incitement of a riot in Brasilia, was submitted to Gonet.
The Supreme Court will review the charges; if accepted, Bolsonaro will face trial.
Bolsonaro, a far-right figure, vehemently denies any wrongdoing. “I have no concerns about the accusations, zero,” he stated to reporters Tuesday at the Senate in Brasilia, adding, “Have you seen the coup decree, by any chance? You haven’t. Neither have I.”
Bolsonaro’s lawyer has yet to comment.
