A Brazilian woman has reportedly been sentenced to 14 years in prison for writing on a statue with lipstick during demonstrations in 2023.

Debora Rodrigues, 39, a supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was convicted of being part of a criminal organization aiming to stage a coup.

The demonstrations occurred after Bolsonaro lost the 2022 presidential election to current President Luiz Inácio . Hundreds of Bolsonaro’s supporters participated in the protests, which included attacks on government buildings.

Rodrigues, a hairdresser, wrote the message “You lost, idiot” on the statue of Justice located outside the Supreme Federal Court.

She claimed she did not anticipate being prosecuted for the act and told the jury she was unaware of the scale of the protests.

“I went to the protests and I didn’t imagine that they would be so turbulent,” Rodrigues reportedly said, according to the BBC. 

“I have never done anything illegal in my life,” she stated.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, according to the BBC, argued that Rodrigues “consciously and voluntarily” joined protesters seeking to overthrow the Brazilian government.

The justice also accused Rodrigues of potentially deleting messages on her phone to conceal evidence and stated she admitted to participating in “anti-democratic acts.”

Bolsonaro’s supporters are using the length of the sentence to claim they are victims of political persecution by the left-wing Lula administration and the Brazilian Supreme Court.

Bolsonaro has called for amnesty for Rodrigues in a post on X.
