Canada Expands Assault Weapons Ban, Proposes Donating Seized Firearms to Ukraine

December 7, 2024 by No Comments

Canada has broadened its assault weapons ban to include 324 additional firearms, reflecting a commitment to stricter gun control measures.

Canadian officials are exploring options to donate seized firearms to Ukraine to aid in its defense efforts.

“Any support we can provide Ukraine brings them closer to victory,” stated Defense Minister Bill Blair.

The latest restrictions, announced by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, also involve increased border security to combat smuggling and trafficking, strengthened firearms regulations, and harsher penalties for gun traffickers.

These restrictions are effective immediately, the government stated.

“This renders these weapons unusable,” explained Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

This move builds upon a May 2020 ban on 1,500 firearm makes and models, a number which exceeded 2,000 last month with the addition of newly identified models.

“Weapons designed for warfare have no place in our communities,” declared Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs. “These weapons have been far too frequently used in horrific crimes.”

Public Safety Canada has been contacted for further comment.
