China Enhances Taiwan Military Drills, Surpasses US in Key Military Areas
China is intensifying its military activities around Taiwan, with a high-ranking commander suggesting these are not mere drills but “rehearsals.”
Adm. Samuel Paparo, head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that China’s increasing aggression and military modernization present a significant threat to the U.S., its allies, and partners. He noted a 300% increase in military pressure against Taiwan, stating that China’s actions are more than just exercises; they are rehearsals.
Beijing seeks to assert its dominance and “reunify” Taiwan with mainland China, a move opposed by the West and Taipei, who warn it goes against Taiwan’s wishes and would destabilize the region.
Taiwan considers itself a sovereign nation. However, China, the United Nations, and the U.S. officially recognize it as part of the “One China” policy, though the U.S. has cautioned against Beijing using force to “reunify” the island.
Paparo stated that the PLA’s attempts to intimidate Taiwan and showcase its coercive capabilities are counterproductive, attracting global attention and accelerating Taiwan’s defense preparations.
Concerns extend beyond China’s military stance toward Taiwan.
Paparo said that China is surpassing the U.S. in the production of air, missile, maritime, and space capabilities and is accelerating this trend. While he remains confident in the U.S.’s deterrence, he emphasized the need for a change in trajectory.
The Indo-Pacific commander cautioned that China is outpacing the U.S. in fighter production at a rate of 1.2 to 1 and is also ahead in shipbuilding and certain missile and space-based capabilities.
Paparo informed lawmakers that China is building combat vessels at a rate of 6 to 1.8 compared to the United States, referring to China’s investment in ships, aircraft, and weaponry.
Paparo stressed the need to address the issues causing a shortage of combat logistics forces, specifically shipbuilding, and to examine pay and incentives to recruit and retain personnel.
