The Royal House of Norway has announced that Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s pulmonary fibrosis has progressed, impacting “her ability to perform her duties.”

Mette-Marit, 51, suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that, according to the Mayo Clinic, causes irreversible lung damage and scarring, leading to breathing difficulties.

The Royal House stated that “The Crown Princess experiences daily symptoms and ailments that affect her ability to perform her duties,” and noted that her condition has “progressed.”

They added, “The Crown Princess requires more rest, and her daily schedule is subject to more frequent changes than before. This may result in alterations to her official program occurring more often and with less advance notice.”

The Royal House of Norway also stated, “The Crown Princess is determined to continue working, and we will organize her official program to best accommodate both her health and her work.”

Mette-Marit received her pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis in October 2018.

At the time, she said, “For several years, I have faced regular health challenges, and we now have a better understanding of the situation. This condition will cause fluctuations in my working capacity.”

She added, “The Crown Prince and I have decided to make this public now, partly because future planning will require periods without official engagements to allow for treatment and when the disease is more active.”

The Mayo Clinic notes that some individuals with pulmonary fibrosis “can remain stable for an extended period, while the condition worsens more rapidly in others.”

They also stated, “As the condition progresses, individuals experience increasing shortness of breath. Medications and therapies can sometimes help slow the progression of fibrosis, alleviate symptoms, and improve quality of life. Lung transplantation may be an option for some.”
