Dead Feared in India Cricket Stadium Stampede
A stampede occurred on Wednesday outside a cricket stadium in southern India, with several feared dead and numerous others injured as large numbers attempted to enter.
The incident took place as thousands of cricket enthusiasts congregated outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate the victory of the Indian Premier League champions. The IPL is the most popular T20 cricket league globally.
Indian officials have yet to release an official death toll. However, NDTV reported that there were casualties, while The Times of India stated that seven people had died.
Local television stations broadcast images of individuals lying on the ground, with emergency services personnel transporting people on stretchers to ambulances.
Cricket supporters throughout Bengaluru celebrated Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first championship victory on Tuesday.
Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar, informed reporters that “the crowd was impossible to control.”
Stampedes are not uncommon in India during large gatherings. In January, at least 30 people died when tens of thousands of Hindus surged to bathe in a holy river during the , the world’s largest religious festival.
