A driver was taken into custody by police on Monday after allegedly driving a minivan into a crowd of soccer fans celebrating their team’s Premier League Championship in Liverpool.

Following reports received after 6 p.m. on Monday, police announced on X that they were investigating a collision in Liverpool city center where a car reportedly hit multiple pedestrians on Water Street.

Authorities confirmed the vehicle remained at the scene and a man was apprehended.

Police urged the public to refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding the incident on Water Street, adding that the arrested individual is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the events leading up to the collision.

The police requested that the public not disseminate “distressing content” online, but instead forward any footage or information to Merseyside Police or Crimestoppers.

Prior to the police’s request, footage circulating online depicted a gray minivan hitting at least one person before swerving into a larger group, pushing people aside like a plow before stopping.

Harry Rashid, who was attending the Liverpool parade with his wife and two young daughters, spoke with the Associated Press.

Rashid recounted that the vehicle began hitting people approximately 10 feet away from his location.

“It was extremely fast,” he stated. “Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.”

On X, said he was being kept informed of the situation’s developments and requested that the police be given the necessary space to conduct their investigation.

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he posted. “I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.”

The incident occurred after a large celebration in the city center, where tens of thousands of fans, dancing and waving scarves and flags, gathered in wet conditions to watch Liverpool’s players display the Premier League trophy from atop two buses labeled “Ours Again.”

Rashid told the AP that after the initial impact, the crowd charged the vehicle, breaking its windows.

“But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,” Rashid said, suggesting the incident appeared intentional. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.”

“My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground,” he added. “They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.”
