EU Military Chief Suggests Deploying European Troops to Greenland, Welt Reports

According to an interview published Saturday in Germany’s Welt am Sonntag, Robert Brieger, the European Union’s top military official, suggested that deploying EU troops to Greenland would be a logical move, particularly given President Trump’s interest in acquiring the Danish territory.

The chairman of the Military Committee stated, “In my opinion, it would be sensible to consider stationing EU soldiers in Greenland alongside existing U.S. forces.”

The Austrian general emphasized that such a deployment would ultimately require a political decision. While the Military Committee, the European Council’s highest military body, holds significant influence, it functions in an advisory capacity as the EU lacks a dedicated army.

The U.S.-led NATO serves as the primary military alliance for the EU.

Brieger noted that both Europe and the U.S. have vested interests in Greenland, despite its status as a Danish overseas territory outside the EU, citing its abundant natural resources and strategic geographical position.

He further commented that “the increasing ice melt due to climate change presents potential for conflict, possibly involving China.”

Trump has openly expressed his desire to incorporate Greenland into the United States, even hinting at the potential use of military or economic pressure to achieve this goal.

Greenland’s strategic location, crucial for the U.S. ballistic missile warning system, has made it a high priority for Trump, as it lies along the shortest route between Europe and North America.

Brieger expressed hope that the U.S., as a UN member, would uphold the principle of territorial integrity as outlined in the UN Charter.
