The family of Austin Tice, a journalist, former U.S. Marine, who disappeared in Syria over a decade ago, has refuted claims that his remains have been located.

The report originated in local news outlets and briefly appeared on FoxNews.com on Sunday. While Qatar is leading an international effort to locate the remains of those formerly held captive by ISIS, which has uncovered remains in Syria, there’s no indication that any of them belong to Tice. Individuals closely following his case report that he was not held by ISIS and was not in the region where the remains were discovered. His family stated in December that they have good reason to believe he is still alive.

A representative for the Tice family stated, “We are grateful for the ongoing mission to help families of ISIS victims find closure. However, the initial, incorrect report that Austin Tice was found among the remains was quickly and definitively disproven.”

Tice, a 43-year-old freelance photographer and journalist, was abducted in Damascus in August 2012. He is a former Marine Corps captain who served in Afghanistan. He traveled to Syria as an independent journalist in May 2012, prior to his last year at Georgetown Law School. No group has claimed responsibility for his kidnapping.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information that helps bring about Tice’s safe return.
