Fugitive California Inmate Arrested in Mexico for Killing Elite Police Unit Leader

The 34-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday by Mexico’s State Investigation Agency.
Hernandez is a suspect in the April 9 shooting death of Abigail Esparza Reyes, 33, who led the “Gringo Hunters,” a Mexican police unit focused on capturing American fugitives in Mexico.
Esparza Reyes was killed in a shootout in Tijuana while her unit was attempting to arrest Hernandez.

Authorities said Hernandez is undergoing criminal proceedings and “his legal status will be determined according to the law.”
Prior to his December 2 escape, Hernandez was serving an 80-year-to-life sentence with the possibility of parole in California for first-degree murder. He escaped while being transported to the Kern County Superior Courthouse in Delano for a court appearance when he jumped from the van and fled.
