Germany Removes Weapon Range Limits for Ukraine Despite Russian Nuclear Warnings
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany and its allies have removed all limitations on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine.
Merz is reportedly trying to broker a ceasefire while maintaining Western backing for Ukraine.
In a post on X, he stated, “We will exert every effort to continue supporting Ukraine. This includes removing any range restrictions on the weapons we supply. Ukraine can now defend itself by targeting military positions within Russia.”
In a statement released on Monday, Merz clarified that the removal of range restrictions would apply to weapons provided to Ukraine by Britain, France, and the United States.
Speaking at a forum organized by WDR public television, Merz stated, “That means Ukraine can now defend itself by, for example, attacking military positions in Russia. Until recently, it was unable to do so, but now it can.”
He added, “In our jargon, we call this supplying Ukraine with weapons capable of striking military targets in the rear.”
Just last week, Merz urged Germany to defend democracy and strengthen the rule of law amidst the ongoing conflict.
He posted, “The Basic Law enables us to live in freedom, peace, and security – something we are proud of. However, our freedom is under attack from both internal and external forces like never before. Therefore, we must champion a strong constitutional state and defend our democracy daily.”
Merz’s comments follow a recent attack by Moscow, which targeted Ukraine with over 300 missiles and drones.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov cautioned that lifting the range restrictions would be a dangerous move, asserting that it “contradicts our efforts to achieve a political solution.”
The Kremlin has warned the West against lifting the restrictions, stating that doing so would make the offending nation a target and expose them to the threat of nuclear retaliation.
