Hamas Says It Will Free American Hostage Edan Alexander
Hamas announced Sunday that it intends to release Edan Alexander, an American hostage.
Alexander, who holds dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship, has been held captive since the October 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel.
According to a statement from the terror organization, translated from Arabic, Hamas has been in contact with the U.S. administration recently as part of mediation efforts to achieve a ceasefire.
The statement added that the organization has shown a “high level of positivity” and that Alexander will be released as part of steps towards a ceasefire, opening border crossings, and providing aid to people in Gaza.
The timing of Alexander’s potential release remains unclear.
reports that the U.S. informed Israel of Hamas’s intention to release Alexander as a gesture to Americans, without any conditions.
The U.S. has told Israel that this move is expected to lead to negotiations for the release of other hostages, following the framework laid out by Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, which Israel has already accepted.
Israel is preparing for the possibility of this release.
Hamas’ political chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the “high level of positivity” shown by the movement in efforts to free Alexander.
Al-Hayya stated that Hamas is ready to immediately begin intensive negotiations to reach a final agreement to end the war, exchange prisoners, and establish an independent body to manage Gaza, ensuring long-term stability and reconstruction.
Alexander moved to Israel at 18 to volunteer in the IDF’s Golani Brigade, living with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and at Kibbutz Hazor as part of a group of lone soldiers.
He was kidnapped on October 7; he had the option to spend the weekend with his mother, who was visiting from abroad, but chose to remain on base to support his comrades on guard duty.
There are 59 hostages remaining in Gaza, with at least 24 believed to be alive, including , who recently turned 21 after spending two birthdays in captivity.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters released a statement expressing support for the Alexander family.
The statement urged that Alexander’s release should mark the beginning of a comprehensive agreement to free all remaining hostages.
The organization also appealed to President Trump to complete his mission and bring all the hostages home.
As President Trump marked his 100th day in office, families of the five American hostages urged him to pressure both Israel and Hamas to secure their release.
In a letter dated May 9, fifty members of Congress urged President Trump to prioritize the release of the remaining hostages.
The letter stated that it is important to keep the five Americans and 54 other hostages in mind. The five American hostages include Edan Alexander, Omer Neutra, Itay Chen, Gadi Haggai and Judi Weinstein Haggai. Only Alexander is believed to be alive while Nuetra, Chen, Haggai and Weinstein Haggai were either murdered on October 7th or in captivity.
While the families of the hostages expressed frustration with the level of support from the Israeli government compared to that from the Biden and Trump administrations, they affirmed that the terrorist organization holding their loved ones captive is the primary adversary.
The organization stated that Prime Minister Netanyahu must fulfill the obligation to bring everyone back, both the living and the deceased, emphasizing that no one should be left behind.
Qatar and Egypt issued a joint statement commending Hamas’ announcement of Alexander’s release.
The countries also reaffirmed their continued joint efforts in mediating the situation in Gaza.
Digital has reached out to the White House for comment, but has not yet received a response.
