The Indiana National Guard confirmed the death of Capt. Eric Richard Hart, 34, in a non-combat incident in Iraq on December 28th, just days after Christmas. He was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.
The National Guard did not disclose details surrounding Hart’s death, stating only that the incident is under investigation.
Capt. Hart, a member of the Headquarters & Headquarters Battalion, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard, served for 11 years. His decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, among others.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2015, graduating from Officer Candidate School at Camp Atterbury.
In a statement, the Indiana National Guard described Hart as a valued member of their team and expressed their condolences to his family and friends. They offered support to those who served alongside him.
The Department of Defense has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
While the U.S. plans to reduce its military presence in Iraq and conclude the current coalition mission against ISIS, the exact number of troops remaining from the current 2,500 is yet to be specified. The revised mission will focus on supporting the approximately 900 U.S. troops stationed in Syria until at least 2026.
