Israel deports Greta Thunberg after intercepting Gaza-bound “selfie yacht”

Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate change advocate, has been deported from Israel after Israeli naval forces stopped her flotilla en route to Gaza, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry announced on Tuesday that Thunberg was en route back to Sweden via France.

“Greta Thunberg has departed Israel on a flight to Sweden (via France),” the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on X.

Thunberg, along with three other activists, were taken to Ben Gurion Airport for deportation. Eight others, including a member of the European Parliament, reportedly refused to sign deportation documents.

The 22-year-old activist allegedly told her lawyers that she could be “more effective outside of Israel” and that refusing to leave would “damage” her cause, according to the Times of Israel, citing the Israeli organization Adalah.

Thunberg is known for avoiding air travel due to her climate activism, making her flight from Israel unusual.

The Israeli military intercepted the flotilla, named the Madleen, early Monday. Thunberg posted a video during the incident, claiming she had been “kidnapped” by Israel, a statement that sparked controversy given the situation of hostages held in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

When questioned about Thunberg’s “kidnapped” claim, President responded, “I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg.” He described the climate activist as a “strange person” and suggested she needed “anger management” courses.

Thunberg was among the 12 individuals on the flotilla, which Israel has called a “selfie yacht,” alleging it was a publicity stunt. The Madleen was transporting aid for Gaza, but Israel claimed the ship’s cargo was less than a single truckload.

“The that wasn’t consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on X after intercepting the Madleen. “There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve provocations and selfies.”

Israel reported on Monday that over 1,200 aid trucks had entered Gaza in the past two weeks, and the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial organization backed by Israel and the U.S., had provided almost 11 million meals to Gaza civilians.
