At least 41 people died in a fire that erupted in a building housing workers in Mangaf early Wednesday, Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah confirmed during a visit to the site.

The deputy prime minister blamed the tragedy on violations and greed by real estate owners, stating these factors contributed to the disaster.

“Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters,” said Sheikh Fahad, who also holds the portfolios of interior and defense ministries.

Major General Eid Rashed Hamad reported the fire to authorities at 6:00 a.m. local time.

“The building where the fire occurred was used to house workers, and there was a large number of workers there. Dozens were rescued, but sadly, some perished due to smoke inhalation,” a senior police commander told state TV.

“We consistently warn and alert against” overcrowding workers in housing accommodations, he said, without revealing details about the workers’ employment or origin.

Authorities have brought the fire under control and are investigating its cause, officials said.
