Ukraine reported that Russia launched its largest drone and missile attack of the war overnight, deploying nearly 500 drones and 20 missiles of various types.

According to Ukraine’s air force, 277 of the 479 drones and 19 missiles were intercepted by air defenses on Monday. Kyiv asserts that only 10 drones or missiles reached their intended targets, resulting in one injury.

The primary targets of the bombardment were located in central and western Ukraine, officials stated.

Russian attacks typically begin late in the evening and continue into the morning, taking advantage of the difficulty in spotting drones in the dark.

Throughout the conflict, Russia has used Shahed drones to strike civilian areas in Ukraine. The United Nations reports that have resulted in over 12,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths. Russia maintains that it only targets military assets.

Despite the recent attack, the Kremlin stated on Monday that Russia remains committed to fulfilling regarding a new prisoner of war exchange and the repatriation of deceased soldiers. This commitment persists despite what Russia claims is Kyiv’s failure to uphold its end of the agreement.

“We have encountered numerous excuses and justifications, but they lack credibility,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters. “The Russian side is still prepared to implement the agreements reached in Istanbul.”

These exchanges, agreed upon during a second round of direct peace talks in Istanbul on June 2, aim to facilitate a new prisoner of war swap involving at least 1,200 individuals, prioritizing the youngest and most severely wounded, as well as the repatriation of thousands of bodies of those killed in the war.

The exchange of prisoners of war and the return of deceased soldiers’ bodies represent one of the few areas of agreement between the two sides, even as broader negotiations have failed to make progress towards ending the war, which is now in its fourth year.
