Massive blackout plunges Chile into darkness, affecting millions nationwide

The Chilean government reported that millions of people, including those in Santiago, the capital city, experienced a power outage on Tuesday.

According to a social media post by the undersecretary of the interior, the blackout impacted regions from Arica and Parinacota in the north to Los Lagos in the south.

Chile’s national disaster response service attributed the widespread outage, affecting over a dozen regions, to a “disruption in the supply of electricity.”

Saesa, the country’s electricity distributor serving over a million people, verified that a nationwide power failure had impacted all of its customers. Chile has a population of over 19 million.

Interior Minister Carolina Tohá announced she was gathering officials and electricity companies to urgently restore power.

Authorities advised drivers to proceed carefully due to non-functional traffic lights and stated that instructions would be issued soon for passengers stranded on subway trains.

The ministry posted on social media, urging “calm” and advising people to “avoid transfers to avoid traffic jams.”
