Noboa Wins Re-election in Ecuador as Crime Concerns Persist
President Daniel Noboa, known for his strict stance on crime, secured a second term in Sunday’s election.
Noboa, representing the right-wing National Democratic Action party, won against Luisa González of the leftist Citizen Revolution Movement, the party of former President Rafael Correa.
The National Electoral Council reports that Noboa garnered approximately 55.8% of the votes, while González received 44%.
With over 90% of the votes counted, more than 13 million eligible voters were mandated to participate in the election.
Noboa, heir to a significant banana trade fortune and relatively new to politics, surprisingly won a 16-month presidency in a 2023 snap election to replace former President Guillermo Lasso.
