A Peruvian fisherman, Maximo Napa, who survived 95 days lost at sea, credits his survival to eating insects, birds, and sea turtles.

Napa was found severely dehydrated and in critical condition by an Ecuadorian fishing patrol approximately 680 miles off the Peruvian coast last Wednesday, according to Reuters. He had set out from Marcona, a coastal town in southern Peru, for a fishing trip on December 7.

“I didn’t want to die,” Napa told Reuters, explaining his diet of insects, birds, and eventually, turtles.

He added, “I thought about my mother every day,” and expressed gratitude for “a second chance.”

Napa had initially packed enough provisions for a two-week voyage, but according to Reuters, he was thrown off course by a storm after 10 days and became lost in the Pacific.

The news agency reported that Napa collected and drank rainwater but ultimately exhausted his food supplies, enduring the last 15 days without any sustenance.

Napa reportedly maintained hope by focusing on his family, particularly his infant granddaughter.

“I prayed to God to bring him back to me, whether alive or dead, even if it was just to see him,” his mother, Elena Castro, told TV Peru, according to Reuters.

“But my daughters never lost hope. They kept reassuring me: Mom, he’ll return,” she added.

Napa has reunited with his brother in Paita, Peru, and is scheduled for medical evaluations.
