Police rule out foul play in death of Walmart employee found in oven “`
Halifax Regional Police have concluded their investigation into the death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee found in a walk-in oven on October 19th. They’ve determined her death was not suspicious and that no foul play was involved.
Police Constable Martin Cromwell stated in a Facebook video update that the investigation revealed no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved in the young woman’s death.
Cromwell also mentioned limited details were available and no further updates were anticipated. He acknowledged public interest but urged consideration for the grieving family, noting the potential harm of speculation.
While police haven’t publicly released the victim’s name, the Gurudwara Maritime Sikh Society identified her as Gursimran Kaur.
The society established a GoFundMe page (since closed) that raised over $194,000 for Kaur’s family.
According to the GoFundMe post, Kaur, who had immigrated to Canada with dreams of a better life, and her mother had both worked at the Walmart for two years.
On the evening of her death, the society executive explained that Kaur’s mother, after an hour of no contact, initially dismissed her daughter’s absence, assuming she was assisting a customer.
Kaur’s phone was unreachable, prompting her mother’s alarm. Her mother sought help from store administration.
“Imagine the horror that her mother experienced when she opened the oven, when someone pointed it out to her!” the society executive recounted, highlighting the family’s unimaginable grief.
Kaur’s father and brother were in India at the time of her death.
Halifax police reported meeting with the family to share the investigation’s findings and offer condolences. They extended sympathy to the family during this difficult time.
A spokesperson previously informed Digital that the store would be temporarily closed.
Reports indicate the store reopened on Monday, and the bakery oven is being removed.
Digital reached out to Walmart for comment but didn’t receive an immediate response.
