Prominent Gay South African Imam Murdered “`
Muhsin Hendricks, recognized globally as the world’s first openly gay imam, was fatally shot in South Africa this past weekend. Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of a hate crime.
According to a police statement released to the BBC, Hendricks was murdered Saturday morning while traveling near the Eastern Cape Province. His vehicle was reportedly attacked.
Authorities reported that “Two unknown suspects with covered faces emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on his car multiple times.”
Following his public declaration as an openly gay imam in 1996, Hendricks established the Inner Circle, a haven for LGBTQ+ Muslims. He had previously been married to a woman before divorcing her that same year.
“The Inner Circle is the longest-standing, largest, and most influential human rights organization globally addressing Islam, gender, and sexual diversity from an Islamic theological perspective,” states the organization’s website. “The Inner Circle operates internationally and supports affiliated organizations undertaking similar work within an Islamic framework.”
In a statement, the Cape Town Ulama Board—a group of Islamic scholars—condemned the murder but clarified that their views “do not align with those of the deceased.”
“Islamic teachings unequivocally condemn violence, murder, or any actions that undermine the rule of law and societal stability,” the statement read. “Therefore, the Cape Town Ulama Board urges our communities to allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation, and through due process, we hope to maintain peace and order.”
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) expressed in a statement their belief that the killing “may be a hate crime.”
“He supported and mentored countless individuals in South Africa and worldwide on their journeys to reconcile faith and identity, and his life exemplified the healing power of interfaith solidarity,” stated ILGA Executive Director Julia Ehrt. “Our deepest condolences go to all whose lives he touched.”
In 2022, Hendricks voiced concerns regarding a fatwa issued by the Muslim Judicial Council condemning homosexuality. The ruling declared homosexuality incompatible with Islam, stating that gay Muslims “have removed themselves from the fold of Islam.”
“While not entirely unexpected, this ruling deeply saddened me, especially given its release during Pride Month,” Hendricks commented at the time. “The term ‘homosexual’ only emerged in the 18th century, while the Quran predates it significantly. How can there be verses condemning same-sex relationships?”
Authorities are actively investigating the incident. No further details are available at this time.
