2024 witnessed the deaths of several prominent international figures, including Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin, and key adversaries of Israel in the Middle East.

Here are five notable figures who passed away this year:

Alexei Navalny, a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died on February 16th. Russian officials reported Navalny experienced health issues after a walk, subsequently losing consciousness and passing away while incarcerated at IK-3 penal colony (“Polar Wolf”) in Kharp, known for its harsh conditions. The 47-year-old was serving a prison sentence.

Navalny was the target of an alleged assassination attempt in 2020, involving suspected Novichok nerve agent poisoning.

In August, Navalny’s widow rejected investigators’ claims of death due to irregular heartbeat and underlying illnesses, denouncing the findings as a cover-up for a murder.

A helicopter crash claimed the lives of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials in a mountainous region. The 63-year-old Raisi had faced sanctions from the first Trump administration for his alleged involvement in the 1988 massacre of Iranian political prisoners and the 2019 killing of Iranian demonstrators.

An official investigation attributed the helicopter crash to adverse weather conditions.

Ismail Haniyeh, the 62-year-old head of Hamas’ political bureau, died in Tehran on July 31st following the inauguration of Iran’s new president.

While no one immediately claimed responsibility, Israel, following Hamas’ October 7th attack, had vowed to eliminate Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders.

Haniyeh served prison time for Hamas membership and was deported to Lebanon in 1992. He later returned to the Gaza Strip after the 1993 interim peace accords. Since 2018, the U.S. had designated Haniyeh a terrorist due to his close ties to Hamas’ military wing.

Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, was killed in a September 27th Israeli airstrike in Beirut.

The 64-year-old Nasrallah, according to the IDF, founded Hezbollah in 1982 and orchestrated numerous terrorist attacks globally.

The IDF stated that under Nasrallah’s leadership, Lebanon became an armed base targeting Israel and the wider region.

Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leader, died on October 16th during an Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.

Sinwar, known as “The Butcher of Khan Younis” for his brutal methods, was widely considered responsible for the October 7th massacre of Israeli civilians by Hamas terrorists.

The 61-year-old Sinwar, long a target of the IDF, remained hidden in Gaza during the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Sinwar’s death.
