Just hours before a scheduled phone conversation between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war, Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 273 drones and decoys targeting the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk regions on Sunday. Ukrainian forces intercepted 88 of the drones, while 128 were likely electronically jammed and lost.

Yuriy Ihnat, head of the air force’s communications department, told the Associated Press that this was the largest drone attack since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The attack occurred after Trump announced a phone call with Vladimir Putin scheduled for Monday at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday that the call would address “stopping the ‘bloodbath’ that is killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, and trade.” He added that he would then speak with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and NATO members.

Trump expressed hope for a productive day resulting in a ceasefire and an end to the “very violent war, a war that should have never happened,” adding, “God bless us all!!!”

The previous largest single drone attack by Russia against Ukraine involved 267 drones on the eve of the war’s third anniversary.

Kyiv regional Gov. Mykola Kalashnyk reported to the AP that a 28-year-old woman was killed in Sunday’s drone attack, and three other people, including a 4-year-old child, were wounded.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also met with Zelenskyy in Rome on Sunday for ongoing peace talks.

Zelenskyy shared on X that the talks covered negotiations in Istanbul where the Russians sent a low-level delegation of non-decision-makers. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness for genuine diplomacy and emphasized the need for a full and unconditional ceasefire as soon as possible.

He continued that they also discussed the need for sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, the battlefield situation, and upcoming prisoner exchanges, adding that pressure is needed against Russia until they are eager to stop the war, and that they talked about joint steps to achieve a just and durable peace.

World leaders gathered in Rome this weekend for Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural mass at the Vatican on Sunday, with Vance leading the U.S. delegation. Zelenskyy also attended the mass.
