Russian Ballistic Missile Attack Kills Over 20 in Ukraine on Palm Sunday

Officials reported that a Russian missile attack resulted in the deaths of over 20 individuals in , as civilians gathered to observe Palm Sunday.

Ukrainian authorities stated that two struck Sumy around 10:15 a.m. Images from the city depict a building reduced to debris, vehicles ablaze in the street, and several bodies on the ground.

“Our community has experienced a devastating tragedy on this Palm Sunday,” stated Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar on social media. “Regrettably, we are aware of more than 20 fatalities.”

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that an initial investigation indicated at least 21 people died in the assault. Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko reported on social media that at least 83 others were injured, including seven children.

The Ukrainian President confirmed on social media that rescue operations were in progress after Russian missiles impacted residential buildings, schools, and vehicles in the city.

“Preliminary reports indicate dozens of civilians have been killed and wounded. Only vile individuals are capable of such actions — taking the lives of innocent people,” he stated.

Zelenskyy also urged the U.S., Europe, and all nations “who desire an end to this war and these killings” to “respond decisively” to the attack.

“Ballistic missiles and aerial bombs have never been stopped by talks. What is required is a treatment of Russia befitting a terrorist,” he said.

The attack occurred less than 24 hours after the top diplomats of Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaking a to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.
