Russian Tourist Dies After Being Swept Away by Wave While Practicing Yoga in Thailand
A 24-year-old Russian tourist, Kamilla Beliatskaya, died after being swept into the sea by a large wave while practicing yoga on a rock at a popular viewpoint in Thailand on Friday.
CCTV footage shows Beliatskaya arriving at the Laad Koh viewpoint parking lot around 1 p.m., taking a pink yoga mat from her red car, and proceeding alone to a rocky area below.
Video then captures a powerful wave pulling her from the rocks. Witnesses, unable to intervene, contacted Bo Phut Police Station at approximately 1:30 p.m. to report her disappearance.
She was last seen struggling in turbulent waters with waves reaching up to nine feet, according to Khaosod English. A search by water rescue teams was called off after 30 minutes due to worsening conditions; Jet Ski operators had already removed their vehicles from the beach earlier that day due to hazardous surf.
The incident occurred near the Laad Koh viewpoint in Surat Thani Province, home to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan. Chaiyaporn Subprasert, head of the Samui Rescue Center, stated that warning systems are in place on all beaches, with red flags indicating no swimming at high-risk locations like Chaweng and Lamai beaches during monsoon season. He suggested the unexpected wave surge may have caught Beliatskaya off guard.
Beliatskaya’s body was discovered on Chaweng Noi Beach around 11 p.m. on Saturday by ImpeƱa Resort Hotel staff. Her boyfriend confirmed her identity.
Authorities advise extreme caution during monsoon season, urging visitors to avoid rocky coastal areas in rough seas.
