Satellite images have revealed the wreckage of a 5,000-ton North Korean naval destroyer, reportedly damaged during its launch ceremony this week, causing distress to the nation’s leader.

A Maxar Technologies photo of Chongjin’s northeastern port shows the vessel twisted on its side, partially on a launch slip and partly submerged.

The secretive nation had covered the damaged warship with a blue tarp.

Maxar Technologies also captured a satellite image of the ship pre-launch, appearing undamaged and ready for its maiden voyage.

However, the launch was aborted when the flatcar mechanism failed, causing the warship to become unbalanced and suffer damage to its underside before sliding into the water, according to state media.

The North Korean leader was reportedly angered by the failed launch, intended to showcase the nation’s military prowess but instead resulting in a public embarrassment.

State media also reported on Kim’s displeasure.

He reportedly blamed military officials, scientists, and shipyard workers for a “serious accident and criminal act” resulting from “carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism.”

The extent of the damage is unclear, but Kim has demanded repairs be completed before the Workers’ Party meeting in June.

The leader warned that the “irresponsibility of the relevant officials” would be investigated during the meeting.

Under Kim’s leadership, North Korea has focused on building its military arsenal, citing it as a response to perceived Western aggression.

In March, Kim oversaw tests of unmanned exploding drones and advocated for increased production.

He also recently announced the country’s pursuit of building a nuclear submarine.

In a rare display of military force since the Korean War, approximately 15,000 North Korean troops were reportedly sent to Russia to aid in its conflict against Ukraine.

South Korea claimed in late April that had been killed.
