School Shooting in Austria Claims 8 Lives, Authorities Report
Officials have confirmed that a school shooting in Graz, Austria, on Tuesday resulted in eight fatalities.
The incident occurred at the BORG Dreierschützengasse school in Graz, which has a population around 300,000. According to Graz Mayor Elke Kahr, the alleged shooter is also dead.
The Austria Press Agency reported Kahr describing the event as a “terrible tragedy.”
The outlet reported that seven students and one adult were among the dead. Kahr added that numerous individuals were hospitalized with injuries.
“The school has been evacuated, and all occupants have been moved to a secure assembly point,” Austrian police stated on X. “The situation is under control, and there is no further threat expected.”
“The reason for the response was reports of gunshots inside the building,” police added.
Following a call received at 10 a.m. local time, special forces were dispatched to the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school.
The suspected shooter is believed to have been a student.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Graz is the second-largest city in Austria, situated in the southeastern part of the country.
In Brussels, European Union spokesperson Paula Pinho stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire city of Graz in Austria. We stand together in mourning as we seek clarity in the aftermath of this horrific event at a school.”
