Seven-Year-Old Killed, Six Wounded in Croatian School Stabbing
A 19-year-old former student attacked Precko Elementary School in Zagreb, Croatia on Friday morning, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old student and injuries to three other children and a teacher. The attack occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m.
Authorities apprehended the attacker, who also inflicted self-harm, preventing a suicide attempt. The attacker, who still resides near the school, has a documented history of mental health issues and prior suicide attempts, according to Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic.
Minister Bozinovic stated that the suspect’s mental state was questionable. Video footage shows children fleeing the school and a medical helicopter arriving on the scene.
Zagreb has declared Saturday a day of mourning. President Zoran Milanovic expressed profound sorrow, calling for unity and a renewed focus on school safety. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic expressed shock and stated that authorities are investigating the incident. Several injured children were transported to various Zagreb hospitals.
According to HRT television, the attacker entered the school and immediately attacked students in the first classroom he encountered.
School attacks are uncommon in Croatia. The press release notes a similar incident in Belgrade last May, where a school shooting resulted in multiple fatalities.
