A 17-year-old girl from Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, died on Monday after a shark attack approximately 100 meters from shore.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Charlize Zmuda, a member of the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club, suffered a shark bite to her arm while swimming.

Nine News reported she was brought to shore, where Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics met her.

The incident occurred at Woorim Beach, an unpatrolled area popular with off-roaders and campers. Paramedics arrived around 4:45 p.m. local time.

Despite efforts from paramedics and witnesses, her upper body injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local news sources stated that Queensland Police will prepare a coroner’s report.

Drumlines, used to deter sharks, are present in the area, although it remains unclear if they were active during the attack.

Bribie Island Life Saving Club has not yet responded to requests for further information regarding Zmuda or the types of sharks in the area.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the attack as “devastating” in an X post, offering condolences to Zmuda’s family, friends, and the Bribie Island community and thanking first responders.
