A small plane crash in São Paulo on Friday resulted in two fatalities. The aircraft collided with a bus on a major roadway.

Footage from the scene shows firefighters battling the blaze engulfing the plane’s wreckage shortly after takeoff.

Debris from the plane struck a bus, injuring a female passenger, and a motorcyclist was also hit by falling wreckage, according to local fire officials.

“Tragically, we started the day in São Paulo’s capital with the confirmed deaths of the pilot and co-pilot,” São Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas posted on X.

“Two pedestrians sustained injuries and were transported to the Vergueiro Emergency Care Unit. The swift response of the Fire Department, quickly extinguishing the fire, prevented a larger catastrophe,” he added. “My deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and friends.”

The accident occurred in the bustling Barra Funda neighborhood in the city’s west, near the downtown area.

Local media displayed images of the burning plane fuselage and bus, with firefighters working to control the fire. The avenue is lined with office buildings and is near a major transportation hub with bus, train, and subway stations.

The plane was en route to Porto Alegre.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
