A Taiwanese Air Force master sergeant died after being pulled into the engine of a fighter jet during a pre-flight inspection at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base on Tuesday, according to officials.

Authorities reported the officer was “inhaled by the engine” for reasons still under investigation. Despite life-saving attempts, she was pronounced dead.

The Air Force Command is refuting reports suggesting an instructor’s actions caused the accident. A joint task force with prosecutors is investigating to determine the cause.

Officials expressed profound sorrow over the loss and pledged full support to the officer’s family. The Air Force committed to a thorough review of procedures to prevent future incidents.

The Taipei Times identified the aircraft as an Indigenous Defense Fighter and reported the victim had served for approximately 17 years.

An aircraft expert, speaking to the Taipei Times, described the possibility of ground crew being sucked into the engine as extremely low, given the engine’s relatively small intake. The source noted that post-landing engine speed should be slow and stopped before wheel chocks are deployed. Hangar security cameras are expected to clarify the events.
