Dutch authorities apprehended three individuals on Wednesday following the theft of a priceless, ancient golden helmet from a small Dutch museum. The helmet, a significant cultural artifact of Romania and approximately 2,500 years old, has not yet been recovered.

The theft of the helmet and three accompanying golden wristbands, also on display, sent shockwaves through the art world and deeply affected Romanian officials who had entrusted the items to a museum they believed offered robust security.

Dutch police announced in a statement that the suspects are undergoing questioning and further arrests remain a possibility. No additional details were provided.

The incident offers a glimmer of hope to the Drents Museum, which has faced criticism for its security measures.

“We eagerly await further developments. The undamaged recovery of the artifacts would be a tremendous outcome, not just for us, but also for the Romanian people,” the museum stated.

The Cotofenesti helmet is one of Romania’s most cherished national treasures, originating from the Dacia civilization. The theft occurred during the final weekend of its six-month exhibition.

Romanian officials described the artifacts as possessing “exceptional cultural and historical importance” to Romanian heritage and identity, emphasizing their disappearance’s significant emotional and symbolic impact.

The heist was described by Ernest Oberlander-Tarnoveanu, director of Romania’s National History Museum, as something “we would not have believed possible, even in our most pessimistic dreams.”

The helmet’s renown and distinctive design make resale difficult, leading to concerns that the thieves targeted the gold itself. However, melting the helmet would diminish its cultural and historical value. Gold currently trades at approximately 85,000 euros ($89,000) per kilogram, and the helmet is estimated to weigh slightly less than that.
