A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake, approximately 50 miles from Mount Everest, struck Tibet on Tuesday, resulting in at least 95 fatalities, according to reports.

State broadcaster CCTV, citing Shigatse’s vice mayor, reported an additional 130 injuries.

Rescue efforts are underway, with workers searching for survivors amidst the rubble in hard-hit villages. Over 1,000 homes are estimated to have sustained damage.

Videos released by China’s Ministry of Emergency Management depicted rescue workers carrying injured individuals on stretchers through the debris of collapsed structures.

The morning earthquake was felt in Kathmandu, Nepal, approximately 140 miles from the epicenter, causing residents to flee their homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake’s magnitude as 7.1, at a relatively shallow depth of about six miles.

The Associated Press reported around 50 aftershocks in the three hours following the main quake, and the closure of the Mount Everest scenic area on the Chinese side.

The news agency, citing CCTV, stated that over 3,000 rescuers have been deployed for disaster relief.

State media indicated that roughly 7,000 people reside in three townships and 27 villages within a 12.5-mile radius of the epicenter on the Chinese side, at an average altitude of about 13,800 feet, according to a social media post by the Chinese earthquake center.

Footage viewed by the AP on Kathmandu’s southwest edge showed water overflowing from a courtyard pond near a small temple.

“It is a big earthquake,” a woman is heard saying. “People are all shaking.”
