Trudeau Rejects Trump’s Idea of Canada Joining the US “`
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphatically rejected President-elect Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st U.S. state, stating on X that such an outcome is utterly impossible. He emphasized the mutual benefits of the current Canada-U.S. relationship as major trading and security partners.
Trudeau’s firm denial followed Trump’s assertion at a Mar-a-Lago press conference that Canada should become a U.S. state, suggesting this could be achieved through economic, not military, means.
Trump previously claimed on social media that many Canadians desire statehood, touting the elimination of tariffs and taxes, and increased security from Russia and China as benefits of such a merger. He envisioned a powerful combined nation.
Trump’s recent pronouncements regarding Canadian statehood include provocative social media posts, a manipulated image depicting him atop a mountain beside a Canadian flag, and derisive references to Trudeau as “governor”. He also threatened substantial tariffs against Canada.
Amidst this pressure, Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister and party leader, citing internal party pressures related to economic handling and Trump’s threats. He will remain in office until a successor is chosen.
Having led Canada for almost a decade, Trudeau faced mounting criticism over the economy and inflation. His resignation allows the Liberal Party to install an interim leader before next fall’s elections, potentially boosting their chances.
Trump’s interest extends beyond Canada; he has also urged Denmark to sell Greenland to the U.S.
