Trump Confirms He Told Netanyahu to Hold Off on Iran Strikes Amid Nuclear Talks
President Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that he advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week against taking military action against Iran while nuclear program negotiations are ongoing.
“Yes, I did,” Trump stated when questioned by a reporter. “It’s not a warning, but I expressed that I don’t believe it’s appropriate at this time.”
Trump emphasized his commitment to reaching a diplomatic resolution to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
These statements follow reports indicating Netanyahu’s threat to disrupt the talks by attacking Iranian nuclear sites, mirroring existing reports of tension between the two leaders.
Israel has faced significant international and domestic criticism for its military operations in the Gaza Strip, aimed at eliminating , an Iranian-backed organization. Israel has also suggested it might target Iran directly.
The rationale behind Israel’s potential consideration of striking Iranian nuclear facilities last week remains unclear, particularly as the U.S. was preparing to meet with Omani and Iranian officials for negotiations.
In a letter obtained by Digital, the Iranian foreign minister cautioned the U.N. Security Council on Thursday about “catastrophic consequences” should Israel attack its nuclear infrastructure, adding that “the government of the United States would bear legal responsibility – having been complicit therein.”
Netanyahu’s office dismissed a New York Times report detailing Netanyahu’s alleged intentions to strike Iran as “fake news” on Wednesday.
However, President Trump’s subsequent comments to reporters could suggest otherwise.
The Trump administration has described the recent negotiations with Iran as promising, and on Sunday, the president told reporters, “We’ve had some very, very good talks with Iran.”
“I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good,” Trump added.
