Trump Expresses Hope for Putin Ceasefire Agreement Amid Signals of No Immediate Truce From Moscow

President Trump expressed his “hope” Thursday that Russia will agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine, aiming to initiate the end of the ongoing three-year conflict.

“We understand the situation in Ukraine,” he stated to reporters in the Oval Office, alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

“Hopefully, they will act appropriately,” he said, referring to Russia.

Trump’s remarks followed an address by Russian President Putin in Moscow, where Putin acknowledged Trump’s ceasefire efforts. Putin stated he agreed with the principles but indicated he was not ready to agree to the 30-day proposal in its current form.

Trump acknowledged Putin’s comments during the Oval Office press conference, describing them as “promising” yet “incomplete.”

“He released a very encouraging statement, though it wasn’t comprehensive,” Trump stated. “I would like to meet or speak with him, but we need to resolve this swiftly.”

The president mentioned that Russian officials have raised concerns regarding discussions about the Zaporizhzhia power plant and Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, topics Putin also addressed in his Moscow speech.

“Many details of a final agreement have already been discussed,” Trump told reporters shortly after Putin’s address. “Now, we will see if Russia is committed.”

“If they aren’t, it will be a significant disappointment for the world,” he added.
