Unexpected Arrival: Norwegian Man Finds Cargo Ship Grounded in His Yard

A man who wanted a waterfront view got more than he bargained for when a cargo ship ended up in his backyard.

Johan Helberg woke up on Thursday to find the massive cargo vessel NCL Salten just a short distance from his home in Byneset, Norway, near Trondheim.

The ship had run aground in the early morning hours, stopping just 16 feet short of hitting Helberg’s house.

Surprisingly, Helberg said he slept through the entire incident. He only found out about the grounded ship when a neighbor rang his doorbell to alert him.

“I looked out the window and was shocked to see a huge ship,” Helberg told The Guardian. “I had to strain my neck to see the top. It was unbelievable.”

Authorities have reported that the ship’s watch officer, in his 30s, fell asleep while on duty, causing the ship to stray from its course.

The officer has been charged with negligent navigation. While there were no injuries or oil spills, the incident did cause minor damage to a wire connected to Helberg’s heating pump.

This isn’t the first time the NCL Salten has run aground. It previously grounded in 2023 but was able to free itself.

Attempts to refloat the ship during high tide on Thursday were unsuccessful.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration is performing geotechnical surveys before attempting another refloating. The shipping company, NCL, has stated that it is cooperating with the investigation.

Helberg remains optimistic despite the unexpected incident.

“It’s a very large new neighbor, but it won’t be staying long,” he joked.
