US Forces at Ain al-Asad Airbase in Iraq Targeted by Rocket Fire

Four rockets struck near Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq on Thursday, a base that houses U.S. troops. However, there were no reported injuries or damage to the base, sources have learned.

A U.S. defense official stated that none of the rockets landed inside the base.

The attack comes shortly after U.S. and Iraqi officials met at a Pentagon summit to discuss the potential end of the coalition against ISIS in Iraq and a transition to a bilateral security relationship, with some U.S. troops possibly remaining.

Iraqi factions aligned with Iran have urged the withdrawal of all 2,500 U.S. troops currently stationed in the country.

This attack on the airbase follows a separate incident where two Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers were intercepted off the coast of Alaska.

NORAD fighter jets from the United States and Canada carried out the interception.

Iran-backed factions in Iraq have launched attacks on U.S. troops at bases in the country numerous times since the start of the protests in October, with a decrease in attacks since February.
